FRACTURE
A Sicily Photo Masterclass collective project
One of the modules of the Sicily Photo Masterclass consists in working together with the workshop participants on a collective project that will grow in time thanks to the contribution of the photographers and Special Guest Tutors that take part of the Masterclass. Because I am working on a personal project in the same area of the Belice valley in West Sicily, I thought it was pertinent to incorporate my work in-progress with the practical aspect of the workshop, so to be able to share with the participants my photographic process and establish a constructive discussion on how to approach a theme and build a personal narrative. The Belice valley is an area affected by a devastating earthquake in 1968 that caused hundreds of victims and tens of thousand of evacuees and has been challenged by a lengthy and controversial reconstruction that still heavily impacts on the social and economic life of its rural community.
The participants will look at exploring and photographing topics related to reconstruction, trauma, separation, regeneration. The group will identify different aspects that define the complexity of the region in the architecture, nature, people, social and economic dynamics and the dialogue between urban and rural context.
