SICILY PHOTO MASTERCLASS

Introduction

The Sicily Photo Masterclass (SPM) is an intensive, week-long photo-retreat designed for photographers seeking to bridge the gap between their personal practice and concrete outlets for their work.

Set against the idyllic landscape of rural Sicily at Case Mollica, the programme combines immersive group tutorials, in-depth individual mentoring, and open discussions on contemporary photographic practices.

Since its inception, the SPM has established a global reputation for excellence, hosting a legacy of world-renowned tutors, including Martin Parr, David Campany, Emma Bowkett, Hélène Binet, Tim Clark, Lucy Conticello, and Aaron Schuman, among others.

In 2022, thanks to the enthusiasm and kindness of some SPM alumni, the Scholarship Fund was established to award, each year, two grants to students and young photographers from diverse backgrounds. The program has given invaluable support and contributed to the personal and professional growth of new talents in photography.

More than a workshop, the SPM is a creative incubator where participants delve into long-term storytelling, refine their visual voice, and gain the strategic insights necessary to navigate the contemporary photographic market.

The full-board Masterclass is graced by freshly prepared Sicilian cuisine, prepared by Mimi’s sister, Paola, who passionately sources all the ingredients locally to offer a truly authentic culinary experience.

Since 2018, the SPM has encouraged participants to contribute to The Valley collective project, curated and directed by documentary photographer Mimi Mollica.
The work produced by the participants of the Sicily Photo Masterclass is displayed on our website and promoted throughout social media channels, exhibitions and in the near future in a physical publication. The project comprises different chapters: Fracture, Gravity and Threshold, each representing various stages of the legacy of the earthquake that devastated the surrounding area of the Belice Valley in 1968.

  • In 2020 I had the chance to partecipate at the workshop organised by Mimi Mollica in Sicily, with Special Guest Tutor Martin Parr, that personally represented a rare experience of artistic mentorship and high-level critical engagement. Mimi is an exceptional mentor, deeply present, attentive, and genuinely committed to each participant’s development. A special mention must also go to the inspiring locations and to his sister Paola’s generous cuisine, which make the experience both creatively and humanly unforgettable.

  • This week in the Sicilian hills was so much more than a masterclass. Having Mimi — such a dedicated and talented photographer — guiding me each day gave me a new sense of confidence. The daily image reviews with the guest tutors and the group conversations helped me see my work with greater clarity and push it further. I have left inspired, grateful, and deeply enriched by this unforgettable experience. Thank you Mimi, Paola, Dewi and Caroline!

  • Attending Mimi’s SPM in 2025 made me realise how I had changed as a photographer since I attended a previous SPM in 2021. Bring a portfolio of work to share can feel daunting, but it’s such a positive and enlightening way to think about motivation, themes and subjects, and you get to see the inevitably diverse and different work from everyone else too. Working on assignments together in local towns and villages is an opportunity to see how everyone can interpret and approach the same theme in different and compelling ways. And the scenery, the venue, the food, are all wonderful!

Richard Eyers, Alumni 2021 and 2025

  • At the 2021 edition of the Sicily Photo Masterclass I made life-long friends, but also with the knowledge and insight I gained from the visiting tutors, planted the seeds of the beginning of a new phase in my practice that led to the subsequent publication and exhibition of my personal work for the first time. Mimi has created something truly special here.

  • I’ve been fortunate enough to attend Sicily Photo Masterclass twice now and wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. Being able to immerse yourself in photography in a beautiful location, discussing work with people as knowledgeable and generous as Mimi and his “A-list” guest tutors; mixing with a great set of people, while enjoying the very best of Sicilian food and hospitality has really been one of the greatest privileges anyone could ask for.

    Mike Chopra-Gant, Alumni 2108 and 2024

  • There are many workshops available to photographers at various levels, but in my experience none apart from Mimi Mollica’s Sicily Photo Masterclass offers its combination of advice, feedback, experience and camaraderie. As a bonus, the setting is stunning and the food and accommodation are amazing. Mimi manages to effectively balance honest feedback and constructive criticism with enthusiastic encouragement in his own unique way. I attended twice - once with Dewi Lewis and once with the great and sadly missed Martin Parr as guest tutors. These experiences contributed greatly to me becoming a professional photographer and I will never forget them.

David Fletcher, Alumni 2018 and 2020

  • I attended the Sicily Photo Masterclass in 2021 and had the best time of my life there. Having the unique opportunity to be taught by Mimi Mollica, Aaron Schumman and Katy Hundertmark, helped me develop my skills and break away fears. Mimi pushed me to photograph out of my comfort zone and that is a lesson transversal to many aspects of my life. The Masterclass is a lovely retreat where you meet like minded people, make friends for life and work on what you enjoy best, which is photography. The location is gorgeous, the weather fantastic is always fantastic, and the food heavenly. Honestly, I couldn't recommend it more.

    Joana Saramago, Alumni 2021

  • I attended the Sicily Photo Masterclass in 2022 (with special guest tutors Helene Binet and Lucy Conticello), and it was the best thing that I had done for myself in over ten years. Alongside Helene and Lucy was the incomparable Mimi Mollica, one of the best critics of my creative practice that I have ever had. The Masterclass, along with my continuing conversations with Helene and Mimi, has tremendously influenced my firm's conceptual project Memory Landscapes (which includes an important photographic component), which Park Books will publish this summer 2026. I learned so much about photography, but also about myself. I met amazing people, many of whom I remain in touch with; and I don't think I have laughed that hard in a long time. The accommodations, Paola's beautiful food, and wine with new friends only made the week that much more special. Thank you Mimi, Helene, and Lucy!!
