Sicily Photo Masterclass
9-14 September 2019
Mimi Mollica FRPS
The Retreat
The Photography Masterclass Retreat is a photography experience that combines an intense hands-on workshop with a relaxed atmosphere. It offers a great opportunity for a selected group of professionals and keen amateurs to live and breath photography and work closely with multi-awarded photographer Mimi Mollica to develop their vision, shape their work in-progress and bring their photography to the next level.
Away from the everyday pressures and indulging in the idyllic Sicilian countryside you’ll have the unique chance to critically advance your photographic skills, shoot new photographs off the beaten track of tourist trails, examine in depth your work, master the editing process and assess viable outlets for your story.
Together, in a group of 6 to 9 you will create sequences, draft narrative layouts and put together the basis for a successful pitch to editors, publishers, galleries and more. A Guest Expert will join the group on selected dates offering exclusive insights on the participants work and sharing knowledge of the industry.
The Farmhouse
The family farmhouse of San Giovanni Vecchio sits near the breathtaking Segesta archeological site and the village of Calatafimi-Segesta. Its beautiful and quite location is immersed in lush vegetation, olive trees, a biodiverse orchard that overlooks the wonderful panorama of the surrounding vineyard and cultivated hills.
Only a short drive from some of the richest and culturally engaging places in Sicily, the farmhouse stretches over two floors with airy and comfortable rooms. It features a swimming pool and has plenty of space to work and relax both indoors and outdoors.
FRACTURE - Collaborative Project
During the workshop we, as a group, will be working on a collaborative project called FRACTURE on the Belice region in the West part of Sicily, an area affected by a devastating earthquake in 1968. The project will grow over the years and will include the work produced by the workshop participants with inputs by myself and the guest experts, with the aim to become a collective book/exhibition authored by the people involved in the different editions of the workshop masterclass. FRACTURE will look at exploring and photographing topics related to reconstruction, trauma, separation, regeneration. The group will identify different aspects that define the complexity of the region in the architecture, nature, people, social and economic dynamics and the dialogue between urban and rural context. The theme can be freely interpret and both Dewi and myself will guide and encourage photographers to work having in mind a coherent project pertinent to they individual photographic approach.
What the May 2018 class say about the workshop:
"What a fantastic learning experience: cosseted in the Sicilian countryside, we were provided with really different photographic opportunities and superb mentoring. I came home enthused and encouraged, with great memories and feeling I had improved my photography.” - Jean, May 2018 class
"Not only are you a great reportage photographer, your prototype masterclass in w. Sicily -which I attended earlier this month- was a triumph. Zia Caterina’s farmhouse provided a wonderfully relaxed setting and your lovely sister Paola looked after us so well. As for the photography, I have come back to London re-energised and with a greater insight into my capabilities.” - Natalie, May 2018 class
""Whether wandering the historic streets of a mountain village or in the noise and dust of industrial factories, Mimi's enthusiasm and passion were contagious and his post-shoot critique and advice was positive and encouraging so that everybody learnt something and learnt to look at their own images from a different perspective. Highly recommended!” - Chris, May2018 class
“These workshops with Mimi aren’t easy - they are designed for people who want to work hard at their photography - but with a lot of personal effort and a great teacher there is every chance for rapid improvement and an increase in confidence”
““Working with Mimi pushed my documentary project forward by a quantum leap. I learned to recognise when I had taken a good picture and what I needed to do take better ones””
